Not Your Grandfather's London Fog (Or Is It?)

LondonFog Is it just me, or is London Fog trying to reposition themselves as the affordable Burberry?

I grew up associating their trench coats to my grandfather (and discount department stores...), but I'm pretty sure he'd blush & run at the sight of their latest ad campaign.

Do these new, provocative ads change the way you view the brand?

Capsules, Capsules Everywhere

MW Alexander McQueen for Target. Matthew Williamson for H&M. YSL for Net-a-Porter. Spring '09 is proving to be the season of limited edition capsules, with retailers trying anything/everything to peak our interest in a time of economic crisis.

As for the clothes...

McQueen for Target is currently available online, and highly disappointing. I adore his signature line as well as McQ, but this collection is just beyond me. Remove the label, and you'd have no idea who designed these pieces (and why).

Williamson's collection will be released in two series, with the first available in select H&M stores on April 23. There are limited images available for preview, but I'm hopeful these pieces will stay true to the bright, playful esthetic that's become synonymous with his brand.

Last but not least, Yves Saint Laurent has paired with Net-a-Porter for an exclusive capsule of fashion and accessories, launching later this month. These items will be priced per usual, but are only available in limited quantities— so start saving.

UPDATE: The YSL for Net-a-Porter collection is now available online, click here to view/shop.

Philo Brings Classic Back

Phoebe With the state of the world economy considered shaky at best, it's only natural that luxury houses are beginning to move away from over-the-top celebrity endorsements and 'it' accessories, to return to what made them famous in the first place— well-tailored, quality pieces that can stand the test of time.

One of the first brands to publicly embrace this trend is Celine, who has managed to coax Phoebe Philo (of Chloe fame) back into the game in hopes of reviving the house with designs that are both relevant and classic.

“I would like them to be investment pieces,” Philo has said of her forthcoming collection. “There’s going to be a big emphasis on trousers and jackets and blouses, and pieces that mix together. It’s also designed in such a way that it takes you through the day. It’s certainly how I dress, and it feels right."

Celine has always been a bit conservative for my taste, but I'm a big fan of Philo's work and can't wait to rediscover the brand through her eyes.

But what do you think— can Phoebe Philo do for Celine what Tom Ford did for Gucci? Or will this brand need more than a change in creative direction to survive in today's competitive market?
